Y Tu Mama Tambien

I have thought about what to put in my blog for 2 days now and I am still unsure how to approach this film.
It is not that I am so naive that I haven't watched films similar to this, or that nudity or drug use in films offends me. It is that it is not what I would have chosen, if given the choice. I did not feel like the nudity, or sex scenes were necessary to get the point acrossed. The point being
that teenagers need guidance and love and family in order to have and understand social and family values. When these things go missing for so long children look to other people or things to comensate what they are missing.
These boy could have been teens from any country. Tenoch's family is wealthy. It appears the housekeeper has basically raised him, and everything he could ever want is at his fingertips. While Julio's family is obviously less fortunate and many things are not so readily available for him. Julio shares a car with his family, where as Tenoch's father has given him a car, but then takes it away from him when he refuses to take a class. This could be any 2 average teens here in America.
Luisa, Tenoch's cousin's wife, seemed to be very elegant at the wedding. So for her to turn out to act the way she does with the boy kind of confused me. I get that she received bad news from the doctor, and that while she is angry with her husbands affairs, she still wants to save his feelings and spare him from learning of her illness. Her behavior with 2 boys is disappointing at the very least.
This film definitely shows another angle of Hispanic culture, one that I would not be proud to show, but realistically it could be any ethnic culture depicted.

  1. I agree with you when you say it could be any teens from any country. I am not a prude with such things either, but I didn't think it was necessary for the language or the raw nudity and sex acts. I have to say though, I did find some of the film funny in a sick kind of way. I didn't think it was too cool for the "adult" to take advantage of the boys. It is happening too much here in the states with teachers and students. Good blog!

  2. I agree with your statement about the boys needing guidence and love to learn core family values. These could have been teens from any country as you so put it. If kids do not have some kind of structured family setting they will have to find something else to compensate for that which is mssing. I totally agreewith you on that point. Most teens do not know what they want so they go out and try new things to scratch that itch.
As far as Luisa doing what she did I think it was because she lost what she had and wanted that same feeling back again of someone really wanting her. Maybe to she was dying and decided to say " What the hell!" to have some fun before she dies. I would imagine a man might interpret the movie somewhat different than a woman would in some regards. Maybe the filmmaker did this to throw us all off huh?

  3. Hey Laurie,
i also agree with all your thoughts in this blog for this particular film. one thing certain, we are still talking about it!!!maybe that was the point of this class - to leave with a bang:)the situation could have been happening in any country, but that country would not have had actor who played Julio's role.Yum:)
on the other hand, seeing how Tenoch's father was an impportant political figure and as they say the apple doesn;t fall to far from the tree, maybe Tenoch would have become a leader of his country and would have been more liberal with the future laws and outlooks on life, i am narrowing down to gay marriage issue.Tenoch being experienced in that kind of matter hopefully would have undestood the complicity of feelings and ways of life and would have helped his country.hey, it's just a thought:)
